Letchworth City Chorus
City Chorus is a community choir, open to anyone who would like to sing. No auditions; just come along to one of our rehearsals on Wednesdays, 7.30pm until 10.00pm at the Free Church, Norton Way South, Letchworth and see how you like it. Our repertoire extends from jazzy show tunes to haunting sacred music. Rehearsals are fun and you don’t need to be able to read music.
Singing in a choir is all about blending voices. You do not have to be soloist standard, just be able to breathe and sing! Singing is great for your health and wellbeing and the team spirit and camaraderie of our friendly group will have you hooked in no time.
The Story So Far...
Every year City Chorus put on 2 concerts in the summer, and 2 concerts at Christmas time. But that's just not enough for us! We are performers and are happiest when we're singing out in the community, or getting involved with local events.
Read below to see how we've grown as a choir, not only in number but also in the community.
We're back with a bang!
We decided we couldn't let our 10th birthday pass us by without a celebration, so what better way than to hold a 'Greatest Hits' concert for you!
Tickets for our Christmas concert are on sale NOW! get yours from Davids Bookshop, on the door, or from a fellow chorister before they sell out!
We were also back at Todd In The Hole earlier this year, a fabulous event packed with music for everyone.
The return after Covid...
We weren't going to let Covid win, so we held a much-needed socially-distanced Christmas concert! We've missed singing, and couldn't wait to perform again!
Well, Covid rather ruined our plans to host a concert to commemorate our 10-year birthday, but watch this space because we'll be back!
Another packed year for Chorus!
Not content with just holding our 'Seasons Of Love' themed Summer concerts, we also sang at the Letchworth Festival in Howard Park Gardens in June, sang on stage at the 'Todd In The Hole' festival in July.
We also had the absolute privilege of singing on the Letchworth Broadway Stage with none other than the amazing Tenors Unlimited in December, as well as holding our Christmas concerts and festive sing-outs in aid of local charities!
Another fun-packed year, hosting our 'Last Night of The Proms' themed Summer concerts, performing at the Letchworth Festival 'Park Live' in July, and singing at a 'Chorus Family' wedding in September.
We also had the privilege to accompany a moving Remembrance service with the very talented poet Toby Thomson in November, followed by our usual Christmas concerts and festive sing-outs, and finally singing at Kings Cross Station in December!
This year City Chorus set their sights high and WON 'The Great British Prom' contest! We performed on stage at Knebworth Park in August, with the National Symphony Orchestra and Classical Brit award-winning Welsh male vocal group Only Men Aloud.
We also hosted a concert with the Llantrisant Male Choir in May, held a concert to raise funds for local church St. Michael's in July, and our patron, Pam Rhodes, compered our Christmas concerts in aid of Garden House Hospice. We were also invited to lead the Christmas Carols at Letchworth Hall Hotel on Christmas Eve, which was really magical.
This summer City Chorus went on its first national tour to Cardiff and joined voices with the Llantrisant Male Choir.
We also performed at Union Chapel, Islington, for a very moving Remembrance Sunday performance (on the very stage that Adele used to sing on!)
We were busy throughout 2015 but our 'Night Fever' themed concert was packed with songs from the shows and movies!
Holding our '5 Year Birthday' concert at Christmas was definitely the highlight this year!
City Chorus went on its first international tour in 2014. Members of City Chorus participated in the 'Fields of Gold' Tour commemorating our war dead and performing at spectacular venues in Normandy, France.
During 2013 City Chorus went on a Tea Tour of local churches, performing in stunning locations followed by scrumptious cakes and tea. The Christmas concert was held at St Michael's Church in Letchworth and we were privileged to be accompanied by the Broxbourne Hand Bell Ringers.
In the summer of 2012 City Chorus held a concert in the stunning St Mary's church in Hitchin, accompanied by a full orchestra and performed a beautiful rendition of Zadok the Priest.
2012 saw the Olympic torch relay pass through Letchworth town centre. City Chorus were there to entertain the crowds and participate in this momentous occasion.
Showtime was the theme for the summer concert in 2011, a selection of songs from musicals and the movies.
As part of the City Chorus community effort we participated in the Arlesey Fun day with singing and a tombola stall raising funds for the Garden City Hospice.
City Chorus was founded on the 20th January 2010. The first rehearsals were held at the Letchworth Salvation Army. The Chorus soon outgrew the church hall, so City Chorus moved rehearsal venues to the Free Church.
The Debut concert at the Free Church was entitled 'Hand in Hand' and also featured the Wilbury Junior School and Philip Fisher - Tenor Horn Soloist.
City Chorus celebrated the festive period with the 'When Christmas Comes to Town' concert held at Plinston Hall Letchworth.
